Freestyle Fitness Instructor Spotlight – Anson Aninao

Pop quiz: what do you do when a third-degree black belt tells you to step. it. up. and get three more reps? You bang out those reps, sir! One of Freestyle Fitness’ most beloved instructors, Anson Aninao is exactly the kind of guy that brings out the best in everyone. And third-degree or no, it’s not because he’s intimidating. He’s just that good.

“I’ve been doing some form of martial arts for 17 years,” says Anson. “It’s an experience that gives me some unique tools to create a different and dynamic class. I like to incorporate lots of striking involving both hands and feet. This is done both standing and on the ground. Doing so brings focus to parts of the body that can be difficult to tone and exercise, and I’ve also found it helps tremendously with overall flexibility.”

freestyle-fitness-reno-ansonAnson teaches Total Body resistance classes every Monday and Wednesday night, and his classes are always packed. You never know what to expect – partner pad work, grueling body weight drills, traditional medicine ball exercises, resistance band sequences or more likely, a mix of it all. Anson keeps it fresh – he knows how you like it.

“I hate lifting weights and going to the gym,” he explains, “But I’ve had no issues staying fit and helping others do the same. I like designing a class that isn’t easy – it’s not supposed to be – and I focus on serious effort and mental toughness.”

If you’re working through an injury or just starting out, Anson’s got your back. “Modifications are great for maintaining the ability to keep working even when you’re struggling,” he says. “It’s been my experience that working through these difficulties makes the results and reward twice as meaningful.”

You’ll be sucking wind, so you get the benefit of a serious cardio sesh too. This is no jog in the park, but even if you’re straight off the couch, you can do it.
