MMA-Style Workouts – Fast, Furious and Crazy Effective

freestyle-fitness-fighterLast week we pointed the spotlight right at the one and only Rick Reeves, and next week we’ll be having a little sit-down with one of Freestyle Martial Arts‘ newest black belts, Darien Cobon. What do these two have in common? Nope, it’s not just their good looks. Both of them instruct the Fighter Physique class right here at Freestyle Fitness. It’s a one of a kind experience here in northern Nevada, a thirty-minute butt whopping that combines interval training with exercises inspired by mixed martial arts. 

So what makes Fighter Physique so effective – and so special? It’s simple, really. The shorter the class, the greater the intensity. A Fighter Physique class is made up of five five-minute rounds – for you math whizzes out there, the other five minutes break down into one-minute rests between sets. That means you bust it out for five whole minutes, which is a really long time when you’re doing a crazy superset of bag work/jump squats/dive bombers, for example. Then you rest for a minute, hydrate, and get ready to go at it again. It’s the definition of high-intensity interval training, or HIIT, and research has consistently shown that it’s most effective form of cardio for anabolic fat loss. Let’s run through the other benefits:

  • Strength training: Trainers incorporate medicine balls, resistance bands, sand bags and your own body weight to work those muscles until they scream. Screaming muscles will mean recovering muscles in just a few hours, and that means you’re getting stronger.
  • Improved agility and speed: Trainers will run you through foot drills and other exercises specifically designed to increase your reaction time. Fighters have to be quick.
  • Core strength: A strong core is a given for a fighter, and your core will benefit from all of these exercises, guaranteed.
